The Ben Young-directed Australian thriller Hounds of Love (review) had its North American premiere at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, and it stunned audiences and wowed us with its intensely serious and emotionally exhausting view of sexual assault. Vicki (Ashleigh Cummings) is to be their fifth victim, after Evelyn (Emma Booth) and John (Stephen Curry) lure her into their car with the promise of a joint and a lift to the party she snuck out for. They drug her and chain her to a bed. We understand, as soon as protagonist Vicki (Ashleigh Cummings) is introduced, that a similar fate lies in store for her.
Hounds of Love tells the story of a Perth schoolgirl named Vicky (Ashleigh Cummings), who’s having a rough time with her parents’ divorce. She’s doing poorly in school, and her pothead boyfriend’s writing her essays for her. They get an appetite for burgers after eluding a hapless traffic cop, and acquire fast-food employee-cum-vegetarian activist Keira (Ashleigh Cummings, so good in the recent Australian thriller “Hounds of Love”) when she wriggles out the drive-thru .
